They were, quite obviously, very different to the Olympic Games we have come to accept as the norm in the modern day. Up until 1992 both the summer and winter Olympics were held in the same year but they are now two years apart.

The original ancient Olympic Games ceased in 393 AD and they were not revived as the modern Olympic Games until 1859. In 1894 an Olympic committee was founded by two Frenchmen. The International Olympic Committee held their first Olympics in 1896 at the Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Although safe in the right hands, fireworks can indeed be incredibly dangerous if handled incorrectly or by intoxicated people.

Let’s go over some very important 4th of July fireworks safety tips to insure the safety of you and your family this 4th of July.thefourth

  1. Take the time to read the instructions that came with your fireworks. Follow the instructions carefully.
  2. Only release fireworks in a safe, clear area. Make sure there are no people or animals close by.
  3. Only buy fireworks from a legitimate source. Illegal fireworks can be dangerous and may explode unexpectedly.
  4. Never allow children to operate fireworks under any circumstances. Children should be kept away from the actual fireworks.
  5. Light only one firework at one time and never throw fireworks in the direction of people, animals or buildings.
  6. If a firework malfunctions, do not try to relight it. Dispose of it safely.
  7. Keep water and a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.
  8. Never operate fireworks while under the influence of alcohol

The above rules are simply common sense when it comes to fireworks safety. Also remember, if you have pets or know your neighbors have outdoor pets, advise them in advance that you will be using fireworks as animals become terrified. Celebrating the 4th of July

The 4th of July is a United States holiday celebrating Independence Day. Celebrating the 4th of July holiday is a fun time for all Americans and a time to reflect on our struggle for independence.

The holiday celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This marked the first step in the United States’ independence from Great Britain.

Independence DayThese days, celebrating the 4th of July generally involves parades, political speeches, barbecues, carnivals, fireworks, picnics, baseball and other public and private events. It is the big patriotic summer event celebrating the history and people of the United States.

In 1776 at the time of Declaration of Independence, it was estimated that 2.5 million people lived in America. Now there are over 300 million people residing in the United States with more arriving each year.

Over 74 million Americans took part in barbecues on Independence Day in 2007 according to a recent census. The bulk of the $207 million worth of fireworks imported from China would have been used on Independence Day in 2007.

Although many states hold fireworks shows, some states have banned fireworks due to safety concerns. Illegal fireworks however still remain a problem.

Most families celebrate the 4th of Jul with a picnic, barbecue or other outdoor summer get together. They often display the flag and decorate with red, white, and blue streamers. It’s hard not to feel patriotic on Independence Day.

How to Make Father’s Day Special

The following article was written by a young man who is looking forward to celebrating Father’s Day with his dad.

Summer is fast approaching us, and soon enough it will be Father’s Day. Father’s Day is one of my favorite holidays because it gives me a chance to take time out of my busy schedule and do something nice for my dad. Over the years a lot of people seem to get distant from their parents, and holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day help them reconnect to the people who made them. (more…)

Memorial Day Still Matters

Memorial Day is fast approaching us. Soon Americans will be celebrating those veterans who served in the Armed Forces and are currently serving. Memorial Day is a special holiday because it let’s us do just what the name implies - keeping those people and their spirit alive in our memories. If you have family members  currently serving in the National Guard or other services, Memorial Day probably extra special.

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of the month of May. It’s a federally recognized national holiday and just about everyone in the United States celebrates it in some fashion. Until 1967, the holiday was known as Decoration Day, and it was instituted to remember the passing of Union soldiers who died in the War Between the States. This was a sad time for the entire country because 600,000 Americans had perished in the war during the past four years. After World War I, holiday went from being about remembrance of fallen Union soldiers, to any American soldiers who had died during any military conflict. (more…)
